Executive Summary
Fish farming in Canada has recently taken quite the spot light, for good or for worse that is still the question that needs to be addressed. I feel the negatives greatly outshine the positives at this point in time. As the wild salmon stocks are currently in danger fish farming is taking double the amount of wild salmon to produce half the amount of farmed fish. The fish that is coming from the farms is i it is a chemical, disease ridden product not beneficial for consumption. There are many issues around the benefits of the actual fish, and what it might do to the wild if they are interbred and mixed among the wild salmon. Along with the negatives come some benefits of these farms. There is a major industry with fish farming which produces very profitable revenues. With these high revenues comes thousands of full time and part time jobs for people that otherwise would be unemployed. Like most industry’s there are many issues that need to be worked on, With some time and money I think fish farming could continue to be profitable while being less harmful on the environment and producing a better healthier food source.

Introduction and background
The topic I have chosen is Fish Farming. This topic hits close to home as both my parents are commercial fisher people, and have been for over 30 years. At home I hear nothing but critical remarks about fish farming, therefore I thought it would be interesting to research the topic and find out a little bit more about what is going on in the waters off the coast of British Columbia.
As food prices are on the rise and healthy eating has become far more prominent I think this is a very important issue. I feel the major problem with fish farming is both the harm it is having on the environment, and the product that is being produced. There are numerous arguments for both sides of the equation. The major question we must ask ourselves is do the benefits outweigh the costs for both the environment and human health. Many people do not think the benefits trump the negative effects. Fish farming started in the late 1960s in Norway and came to Canada in the 1970s. Considering that fish farming has only been around for 30-40 years there are still lots of “quirks” that need to be worked out before it will be considered a trusted renewable resource. Major Issues
There are numerous different arguments around fish farming, for every pro there tends to be an equally strong con. I think the major issues are the cost of production and the environmental impact.
It is known fact that the wild salmon stocks are dwindling and have been for some time now, and with the growing population we need to think about sustainable resources, we grow our own vegetables why not our own fish? While this might seem like a logical thing to do, what is not mentioned is that it takes nearly two pounds of wild salmon to feed one pound of farmed fish. How could anyone see this as a logical thing to do, using up more resources then you are producing. Worldwide, the salmon farming industry has witnessed extraordinary growth since the 1980’s with Chile, Canada, Norway and UK emerging as some of the largest producers (Eagle et al, 2004). Salmon farming is the process of harvesting salmon in cages or pens, usually offshore, as opposed to traditional capture fisheries.The economic and food production benefits of salmon
farming (Salmo salar) will first be discussed. However there are many detrimental effects of salmon farming and this essay will predominantly take the position that the detrimental effects of salmon farming are far greater than the economic and food provision benefits. Salmon farming provides employment to people in isolated areas where employment is not as easy to find, such as the Highlands of Scotland. It can also benefit the local economies – between 2006 and 2011, ?35.7 million of capital investment was invested by SSPO (Scottish salmon producers organisation) companies, in Argyll and Bute alone. Furthermore, 2124 people were directly employed by salmon farming in Scotland (SSPO, 2012).

Aquaculture is an industry that encompasses the cultivation of aquatic plants and animals in controlled systems for commercial, recreation or resource management purposes. The most widely accepted short definition of Aquaculture is the cultivation of any aquatic (freshwater and marine) species of plant or animal.
Aquaculture for food production is similar to other forms of animal husbandry, the animals are cared
for, protected and fed with the intention of increasing their quantity and value. The holding and farming of fish also reduces the effort otherwise required to locate and capture supplies from wild stocks. Fish farming has boosted consumer confidence in product quality while helping to ensure more orderly and timely harvesting / distribution of fresh seafood products.
Aqua Farming, like agriculture in general, is an industry born out of necessity. Humankind invented agriculture to meet the food demands of an ever increasing population, (we needed to farm crops and animals). Reliance on hunting and gathering from wild resources alone could not, cannot and will not sustain our need for food. Fish and shellfish are no exception, indeed many wild fish stocks that were once considered to be &vast and endless&, are now over fished and labeled as unsustainable in their present state.

The global returns for fish farming recorded by the FAO in 2008 totalled 33.8 million tonnes worth about $US 60 billion.
