是以云计算为基础的游戏方式，在云游戏的运行模式下，所有游戏都在服务器端运行，并将渲染完毕后的游戏画面压缩后通过网络传送给用户。在客户端，用户的游戏设备不需要任何高端处理器和显卡，只需要基本的视频解压能力就可以了。云计算（cloud computing），是一种基于互联网的计算方式，通过这种方式，共享的软硬件资源和信息可以按需提供给计算机和其他设备。提供资源的网络被称为“云”。
云游戏概念
云游戏（Cloud gaming）又可称为游戏点播（gaming on demand），是一种以云计算技术为基础的在线游戏技术。云游戏技术使图形处理与数据运算能力相对有限的轻端设备（thin client）能运行高品质游戏[1]
。在云游戏场景下，游戏并不在玩家游戏终端，而是在云端服务器中运行，并由云端服务器将游戏场景渲染为视频音频流，通过网络传输给玩家游戏终端。玩家游戏终端无需拥有强大的图形运算与数据处理能力，仅需拥有基本的流媒体播放能力与获取玩家输入指令并发送给云端服务器的能力即可。
就现今来说，云游戏还并没有成为家用机和掌机界的联网模式。如果这种构想能够成为现实，那么主机厂商将变成网络运营商，他们不需要不断投入巨额的新主机研发费用，而只需要拿这笔钱中的很小一部分去升级自己的服务器就行了，但是达到的效果却是相差无几的。对于用户来说，他们可以省下购买主机的开支，但是得到的确是顶尖的游戏画面（当然对于视频输出方面的硬件必须过硬）。你可以想象一台和一台拥有同样的画面，家用机和我们今天用的机顶盒一样简单，甚至家用机可以取代电视的机顶盒而成为的电视收看方式。
云游戏技术
云游戏使用的主要技术包括云端完成游戏运行与画面渲染的云计算技术，以及玩家终端与云端间的流媒体传输技术[2]
云计算技术包括狭义与广义两类。狭义云计算指IT基础设施的交付和使用模式，指通过网络以按需、易扩展的方式获得所需资源；广义云计算指服务的交付和使用模式，指通过网络以按需、易扩展的方式获得所需服务。这种服务可以是IT和软件、互联网相关，也可是其他服务。
云游戏类似于视频点播。许多供应商提供这种技术，只是需要一定的网速和按月收取租金而已。
云游戏挑战与进展
与传统游戏模式相比，云游戏能在很大程度上减小玩家游玩游戏的设备成本。对于许多需要长期更新的高品质游戏而言，云游戏也能减少游戏商发行与更新维护游戏的成本。然而在保证玩家游戏体验上，云游戏与传统游戏相比具有一定差距，主要包括：（1）游戏交互时延取决于网络通信延迟。与传统网络游戏仅需传输游戏状态数据相比，云游戏的多媒体传输对网络延迟更为敏感，当网络通信质量较差时，玩家会直接感受到从指令输入到画面更新间的延迟较高，从而显著降低玩家游戏体验质量。（2）游戏场景渲染的多媒体流质量取决于网络通信带宽。与传统网络游戏相比云游戏的多媒体流需要消耗更多带宽，并且画质越高的多媒体流，其消耗的带宽资源也会越高[1]
早在2009年，诸如OnLive、Gaikai等商用化云游戏平台既已出现。然而由于未能很好解决上述技术难点，这些早期商用化并没有取得较大成功。针对云游戏场景下的交互时延、多媒体质量等技术挑战，学术与产业界仍然有许多研究与尝试，其中较为成功的包括云游戏平台开源项目GamingAnywhere[3]
、PlayStation Now[4]
、NVIDIA Shield [5]
等。GamingAnywhere是一项云游戏系统开源项目，提供了基本的云游戏客户端与服务器功能，为后续云游戏技术研究提供了平台。PlayStation Now是索尼（SONY）公司基于PlayStation Network为玩家提供的云游戏服务，支持玩家通过PS4在线游玩PS3游戏而无需安装游戏数据。NVIDIA Shield是英伟达公司（NVIDIA）提供的、同时包含私有与公有云游戏服务的平台，支持玩家通过Shield Android TV（电视）、Shield Portable（掌上游戏机）等设备，游玩玩家PC或NVIDIA GRID云平台上运行的游戏。
