武术的发展，离不开武术者的继承。继承是发展的基础。正确的武术传承方式对中国传统武术的传承具有重要的意义。传统武术发展中，学武者从基础学习，稳扎稳打，一步一步的传承武术的精华，去其糟粕，吸其精华。传统武术继承者，只会单纯的继承本派武术，对自己所学武术达到自负的情况下，不愿吸取他门武术精华。传统武术的闭门造车不可避免的影响了武术发展的进程。
在中国传统武术这种消极的一味传承背景下，我们应该改变传承方式，建设优秀中国武术的传承方式。
第一，拳师们应该解放思想，不分性别，不分门派，不分种族，广收门徒，倾囊相授。以前强调女子无才便是德，如今21世纪的新中国，女子有很多在学习文化知识，充实自己的同时，也注重自己的安全问题，学习武术。不仅能强身健体，更能保护自己。
第二，各个拳种、门派在传承过程中不能一味的接受，应该用发展的眼光看待自己，去其糟粕，留其精华，古为今用、推陈出新，坚持保护利用、普及弘扬并重。相信很多人都看过武侠小说，武侠电视剧。当中武林各大门派每过一段时间就会举办武林大会，比如：华山论剑等。武术的交流就在此体现，他们举办武林大会，各大门派弟子相互切磋，为的就是提高自己门派武术的程度，但是同时更是促进武术大家庭的进步。
第三，在武术的传承教授过程中，应该紧跟时代的步伐，因材施教，对不同的教授群体采用不同的难度标准，使每个武术学习者都能体会到中国传统武术带给他的乐趣和价值。
在中国几千年的武术发展过程中，它不是没有基础的、孤立的创新，而是与继承和交流相联系的创新。
