New York, 1974. Fifty-year-old Chris (Clive Owen) has just been released on good behavior after several years in prison following a gangland murder. Reluctantly waiting for him outside the gates is his younger brother, Frank (Billy Crudup), a cop with a bright future. Chris and Frank have always been different, and their father, Leon (James Caan), who raised them alone, seems to favor Chris despite all his troubles. Yet blood ties are the ones that bind, and Frank, hoping that his brother has changed, is willing to give him a chance - he shares his home, finds him a job, and helps him reconnect with his children and his ex-wife, Monica (Marion Cotillard). But Chris' inevitable descent back into a life of crime proves to be the last in a long line of betrayals, and after his brother's latest transgressions, Frank banishes him from his life. But it's already too late, as the brothers' destiny is bound together, forever.

Movie based on character development, great one by Canet
IF YOU EXPECT THIS TO BE A CLASSIC Hollywood GANGSTER MOVIE, YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED! It's not, it's way more than that, it's almost entirely based on the characters development. As the movie unfolds, we learn more and more about the lives of the two brothers, and the circumstances in which they keep finding each other, which makes it very hard for them to connect on a brotherly level. The actors play their roles to perfection, very believable, specially Clive Owen and Marion Cotillard. The cast is exceptional and bring out the essence of the period. I really enjoyed this movie from beginning to end, and I'm glad it wasn't action based. I didn't find the 2 hours long like some of the viewers, although I understand it's not for everybody who usually expect more dynamical plot from a 70's movie.

Wang makes pills for his son at home using traditional Chinese medicine. Photo: CFPA father in Shenyang, Northeast China's Liaoning Province, has shown his love for his son in a special way, donating blood every three weeks.Over the past three years, Wang Chunping, 55, has insisted on donating his blood in a hospital to offset the cost of the blood transfusions his son Wang Yu, who suffers from aplastic anemia, needs twice a month.Even with the constant donations, Wang Chunping still needs to pay more than half of the 4,000 yuan ($650) a month for his son's transfusions cost.Wang Yu was diagnosed with the disease 18 years ago at the age of 12. It was a big blow to the low-income family, and Wang Chunping's wife chose to divorce him and leave home. Through odd jobs like carrying sand bags and taxiing passengers with an old motorcycle, the father struggled to get through life, sometimes borrowing money from friends and relatives. His son has become more and more reliant on blood transfusions to stay alive. At first, he needed a blood transfusion every month. Since 2010, he needs blood every half month. A transfusion costs 2,000 yuan, and the government does not cover the cost.Three years ago, Wang Chunping started donating his blood to offset the cost. According to the hospital's rules, for every donation, the donor's child can use the equivalent of half amount of the donated blood for free. Wang has already donated blood for 48 times.Wang Yu's doctor said his aplastic anemia can only be cured from a bone marrow transplant, but the cost is an extravagant hope for the poor family.Wang Yu, now 30, sees his father as a tough guy with a great heart. After the father donates blood, he saves the instant noodles and biscuits the blood bank gives him, and takes them back to his son. Every time when the day for a blood transfusion approaches, Wang Yu becomes so weak that he can't walk. His father carries him on his back, from home to hospital, including walking down six flights of stairs to get out of his apartment."In my wildest dreams I never hope for a complete recovery, but only to be half as healthy as a normal man. Then I can help my father," Wang Yu said. The maximum age for people to donate blood is 60. "I have five more years. In these years, I must have a good body. If I fall down, my son would be in a hopeless situation," said Wang Chunping. What will happen in five years, when Wang Chunping can no longer donate blood, the father and son don't dare to imagine.
