十二属相老鼠为什么排第一呢?这里面有个故事。这个故事的寓意是：能正确认识自己的人，才能受到人们的尊敬和肯定。
狮子大王召集十二生肖开会，商量排座次的事。但到底应该把谁排在第一位呢?狮子大王很为难。因为许多生肖都要求自己排第一，并且为此争论不休。
狮子大王没有办法，便说道：“这样吧，你们都上来说说自己要排第一的理由，谁说得最有道理，谁就排第一!”
于是，十二生肖中的牛、虎、兔、龙、蛇、马、羊、猴、鸡、狗和猪纷纷登台演讲。但他们都只说自己的优点，对缺点避而不谈。
老鼠是最后一个上台的。他诚恳地说道：“我虽然也有长处，但是和各位相比，还有很大的差距。论耕田，我一比不上牛;论看门，我比不上狗;论奔跑，我比不上马……所以无论如何，我都不能排在生肖的第一位!”
“恰恰相反!”狮子大王对老鼠说，“这第一的位置非你莫属!”
台下的十一生肖听了都目瞪口呆，狮子大王说：“我觉得老鼠非常诚恳，他能正确地认识自己，所以我选他当第一!”
其他十一生肖听了，一个个羞愧地低下了头。于是，老鼠坐上了生肖第一的位置
