Ladislav "GuardiaN" Kov&cs was the star of Natus Vincere throughout the year and that earned him the 11th spot on our Top 20 players of 2014 ranking presented . He mainly stood out at smaller events like Game Show League and SLTV StarSeries IX which Na`Vi won, but was nevertheless one of the best AWPers and entry killers of the year.
The most famous Slovakian player
has a lot of experience at the top level, stemming from late 2009 and his CS:Source days when he rose to the top as an 18-year-old.
It didn't take him long to establish himself as a star after CS:GO came out despite having troubles to settle in a team, as he finished 2013 at the
of our Top 20 players of 2013 ranking.
Near the very end of 2013 he signed for Natus Vincere and immediately shown that he will be the star of the team with his performance at SLTV StarSeries VIII Finals.
Having failed to make it past the group stage at DreamHack Winter, Natus Vincere had to qualify for EMS One Katowice. After making light work of Norwegians partyastronauts, the Ukrainian-Russian-Slovakian side had to put in a lot of effort to defeat
and 's team called TBA, later known as Property.
Eventually they made it after double overtime on map three, and it was largely thanks to
who was one of the best players of the .
But when that first major of 2014 came around, Natus Vincere were disappointing and they failed to make it out of the group stage. What's more, they ended up last in their group after losing convincingly to LGB and then losing a close battle against 's Clan-Mystik.
Not a good start to the year at EMS One Katowice
Even though
did relatively well against his French AWP counterpart, he overall disappointed in the tournament by managing a kill in only 38% of the rounds (20 out of 53) and ending up as Na`Vi's worst rated player with a 0.86 rating.
After that the squad unsurprisingly skipped Copenhagen Games after their
at the previous year's edition, so their next event was one on home soil in Kiev, Ukraine & SLTV StarSeries IX Finals.
With the world's top three teams according to our &attending - NiP, Titan and Virtus.pro - Natus Vincere, who were ranked 12th at the time, weren't expected make any waves at the event.
However, they came out swinging and in one of the most dominant fashions anyone did throughout the year they won the tournament, taking down NiP 2-0 on two occasions and Titan 2-0 in the upper final.
was one of the biggest reasons for that success as he excelled with the AWP and was the team's main entry killer. We described his performance in more detail in our
article after the event, where it was noted he was only second to his teammate
in the MVP race.
GuardiaN's 1-on-3 clutch against NiP at SLTV StarSeries IX
Having hinted at a world class level with that performance, Na`Vi went into DreamHack Summer as one of the potential favorites. But at the start they were in for a cold shower as they found themselves on the wrong end of one of the year's biggest upsets, losing to an unproven squad FlipSid3 in the opening match.
They came back from the abyss and defeated the young Swedes in the group's second place decider 16-5, while
had one of his best highlights of the year in that match - an ace with a 1-on-4 clutch.
Ace with a 1-on-4 clutch in the FlipSid3 decider at DH Summer
Despite that
didn't really excel in the group stage, but then he stepped up to defeat Virtus.pro in the quarter-final, having an impressive Man of the Match performance on map two (28:11, 1.93 rating, ).
He continued with great play in the semi-final against Epsilon, top fragging with 42:27 (1.33 rating) to lead the team into another final. However, he did not perform well against NiP on stage this time, recording only a 3:17 score on the first map and ending up with 0.48 kills per round as Na`Vi lost to the Ninjas 5-16, 16-19.
Nevertheless, despite his overall inconsistent performance which resulted in having only the third highest rating in the team (1.13), his play early on in the playoffs was one of the main reasons they made it so far.
Less than two weeks later Natus Vincere were on a plane heading to Dallas, Texas for ESEA Season 16 Global Finals. However, they had to make the trip without
whose passport was lost by the US embassy during the visa acquiring process, so he was
by the team's former player .
They did manage to beat the two second tier North American teams, Manajuma and NetcodeGuides, but couldn't put up the needed fight against compLexity and in the lower final vs. Virtus.pro, finishing 4th in the end.
was the star of the team from start to finish, having a rating above 1.00 in 8 of their 9 maps, and especially excelling in the last series despite the 1-2 loss to the Poles.
Virtus were definitely the better team in that match, but
was the best player on the server as he had an 80:54 score with 0.99 kills per round. His third map performance was particularly impressive (28:16, 1.74 rating, ) but it was far from enough as they lost 9-16.
GuardiaN was in great form at ESEA S16 Finals
He ended up with the third highest rating of the whole event (1.23) and had contributed in his personal year-high 69.6% of rounds, making it perhaps his best performance in 2014.
After a short summer break, Na`Vi once again had the task of qualifying for the next major, ESL One Cologne. This time their road was even harder as they lost 2-1 to London Conspiracy in the match for a spot and were sent to the lower bracket.
There they first had to overcome Planetkey, which they did thanks to a heroic performance by
during double overtime on the second map (57:26, 1.76 rating, ). Then it all came down to another clash with
and his new team ESG, where the Ukrainians finally prevailed after three maps.
& co. were placed at the 3rd spot, only behind Virtus.pro and NiP. Despite that, they opted not to attend Gfinity 3 to further prove themselves at the start of August, but instead focused on preparing for the upcoming major.
It all began well in Germany as they beat Copenhagen Wolves 16-6, but then a 12-16 loss against LDLC followed.
The group's second place decider saw them once again meet the Danes, and while
was quiet in the first two matches he exploded when it was needed, tipping the scales in his team's favor in an overtime battle with a 35:19 performance (1.46 rating, 27 AWP kills) to pull them into the playoffs for the first time.
GuardiaN's POV vs. Cph Wolves at ESL One Cologne (35:19, 27 AWP kills)
But then in the quarter-final against fnatic, even though he was a hero of the second map victory with an&&to close it, he severely underperformed in the other two maps, having a kill in only 18 of 57 rounds as Na`Vi found themselves eliminated with a 14-16 third map score.
He ended up being the team's second best player overall due to that (1.04 rating), far behind , but he was still a crucial part of getting out of the group.
A couple of weeks later it was time for the SLTV StarSeries X Finals, although now with a less impressive lineup of myXMG, HellRaisers and fnatic attending.
But once again they were unable to take down the Swedes, neither in the upper final (0-2) or in the grand final (2-3). They did manage to beat their local rivals HellRaisers two times though, and
was the Man of the Match during all four of the map wins & including a 29:11 performance in a 16-6 win on Dust2 (1.96 rating, 20 AWP kills, 5 entry kills, ) and 31:17 in a 16-14 Inferno triumph (1.52 rating, 5 entry kills, ).
GuardiaN's POV vs. HellRaisers at SLTV StarSeries X Finals
He also played well against fnatic this time, so the Slovak ended up as the third highest rated player of the event (1.24), only behind two of the Swedes. He ended up being the only Na`Vi player with an above average rating and was by far the most valuable in the rounds they won, having scored a kill in 72% of them.
Their next event was a month later, Game Show League Finals, and the opponents remained almost the same with only Virtus.pro (without ) being there instead of fnatic.
And without the Swedes to spoil their fun, Natus Vincere managed to grab their second title of the year, defeating Virtus.pro 2-1 and then HellRaisers 2-0 in the upper final and 3-2 in the grand final.
was again the star of the team, although in a less dominant fashion as he didn't have any big performances, but he was one of the team's best in each of their wins. He ended up contributing with a kill, assist or survival in 69.5% of their rounds (or 92.7% of the ones they won) and had the team's highest rating of 1.13 & making him the MVP of the tournament.
Another smaller event was next in line, SLTV StarSeries XI Finals, this time with three French teams in attendance & LDLC, Titan and Epsilon.
But just like with fnatic last time, Na`Vi struggled against LDLC and finished 2nd after a big battle in the final (2-3).
was yet again the team's standout player, putting in several Man of the Match peformances. Firstly he was great on the second map against Epsilon as Na`Vi made a big comeback (28:16, 1.45, ) and then he was the best fragger of the grand final despite the loss.
GuardiaN had some heroics against LDLC in the StarSeries XI final
He actually didn't do so well in the upper final against LDLC having only 0.53 kills per round, and it looked like he won't be able to make an impact in the grand final either, having put in similar production on the first map.
But with Na`Vi's back against the wall he led them to win the next two maps with two outstanding performances. They won Dust2 19-17 as he scored 12 entry kills and had no entry deaths, ending up with 35:24 (1.42 rating, 26 AWP kills, ), and then he had a similarly important display in a 16-12 win on Overpass - 30:16 (1.64 rating, 6 entry kills).
A few weeks later and after three smaller events in a row, Natus Vincere finally attended a big one & ESWC, where they even managed to top their group ahead of fnatic and reach the semi-final after taking out iBUYPOWER in the first playoff round.
But that's where their story ended as they lost to LDLC once again, and then also to Virtus.pro in the 3rd place decider.
Couldn't find a way to get past LDLC
was great in the group stage in wins against eNergy, k1ck and London Conspiracy, but he didn't continue in the playoffs where he even played below average (0.91 playoff rating).
He ended up with a 1.06 rating overall, and was still one of the best entry killers of the tournament with a 50:29 entry score (63% success rate).
In the period following the previous major, Na`Vi always reached the final or the semi-final of tournaments they attended but they could never beat fnatic and LDLC in best of three series, so they didn't go into DreamHack Winter as one of the favorites.
They didn't start too well at the last major, losing to Virtus.pro 2-16 in the group's first place decider. Then they only made it out of the group after overtime against FlipSid3, while& was one of the stars of that deciding match as he recorded a 29:17 score (1.34 rating, ) and was a factor in all 19 of their round wins.
In the quarter-final the Ukrainians met dignitas for the first time ever on LAN and actually had no problems going through, winning 16-3 and 16-13, while
had a solid performance as the third best in the team with 43:30 (1.25 rating).
However, they then ran into LDLC in the semi-final and that was once again the end of the road for them, as they lost 11-16, 11-16 while the Frenchmen went on to win the title.
had his best majors performance at DH Winter, although with a not too exquisite 1.10 rating, and again as second best in the team. He did however score the most AWP kills per round out of all players & 0.40.
In their final efforts until the end of the year Natus Vincere attempted to qualify for MLG X-Games Aspen, but lost to ESC in the first qualifier and gave up on the second one.&Near the end of December they were ranked
according to our ranking.
Why is he the 11th best player of 2014?
As the number one star of Natus Vincere,
was one of the best entry killers and AWPers of 2014. However, his most impressive moments mostly came from smaller events.
He helped Na`Vi win SLTV StarSeries IX and Game Show League, as well as finish second at SLTV StarSeries X and XI, and more importantly DreamHack Summer. At the majors he made it to the quarter-final of ESL One Cologne and at the very end of the year to the semi-final of DreamHack Winter.
He didn't really impress at the biggest events though, having only a 1.04 rating in the majors (the second lowest in the Top 20), and not excelling in his next biggest tournament either - ESWC.
In spite of that he still was one of the best players of the year, as his contribution at the other events was superb. With MVP-worthy performances he led Na`Vi to win their two titles, as well as reach the final of DreamHack Summer. He also excelled at ESEA Season 16 Finals where he was one of the best players of the tournament, and at the latter two SLTV StarSeries seasons where Na`Vi finished second.
In fact, he only had one bad event which was EMS One Katowice at the start of the year, while in the other nine he was always playing at least well, if not great.
One of the best AWPers and entry killers
He mainly made a difference with his AWP, which he used to score 0.41 kills per round, ranking 2nd in the world in that category. In fact, if we look at the rounds Na`Vi won, 's AWP was involved in 37.6% of them which actually ranks first by a hair.
He also had the fourth most entry kills per round overall (0.15) while winning 60.7% of his entry duels (2nd highest success rate) - 47.2% on the T-side (4th highest). And once again if we look at rounds Na`Vi won, 22% of them came after his entry kills, which ranks 3rd.
In the end that was enough to get him to the 11th place, but due to the fact that he performed best at the smaller events and wasn't as great at the biggest tournaments he couldn't break the top 10.
Also notably he was one of the best players on Dust2 (6th with a 1.20 rating), Overpass (5th with a 1.17 rating), Mirage (7th with a 1.17 rating), as well as the less played Season (2nd with 1.24) and Train (4th with 1.24), while on the other hand he was only average (1.03 rating) on the map Na`Vi played the most - Inferno (23 times).
What is your take on 's performance in 2014? Is the 11th place the right one for him?

expectedWell, there will be no more Na'Vi :'(?I mean I hope they will add Edward into top 10 :IWill see:) I think he will be top 8 because this year was good to him^I)edward...The last hope, and maybe s1mple :)Lol are u crazy? No Edward and DEFINITELY no s1mple...s1mple confirmed bro.)S1mple whole year? He has been in Dreamhack Winter only, rest of year he played for A-Gaming, which is shit-tier team, like he played incredible but he joined HR in Autumn man..
finally agree with u man, but it's would be freaking joke to see no representatives from HR (6th team according to HLTV). and it's very very possible. only Dosia has a bit chancesPost edited
19:09:42nope, can't see how Edward can be in top 10 when so many good players leftso for dis rating is very important to perform well on majors and be consistently strong against top teams. this is how edward can be in top 10)true
jw krimz flusha gtr f0rest
snax pasha kennys shox
and lastly edward/cajunb
just look cajunb's major ratings ^^tbh, none of them, happy :Pu forgot about Happy, bro. probably in top 5. and it's seems there is no place for Edward :(, although top1/top2 player of 4th team on the Earth . maybe no some of ur fnatic's condidates. lets seen1you voted for putin. next year there will be no Na'Vi.such a pathetic autist...Not sure how you can say that after 1 line of text from me.Ukraine =/= Russia...one man army&Dso stronkunderrated+1i not agrree with thisUnderrated :'(Underrated ..3 best awpers cannot be in top 5 manHe should at least get in top 10.For me GuardiaN is still better than KennyS, because he never leaks, like Kenny which doesn't play good in every match...i agree, kennyS is super overrated and guardian is underrated... imo GuardiaN is the best AWPer in the world...I used to think that, but comparing latest performances I'm pretty sure kennyS is better, even though that can change easily.kennys does 30 kill everymatch, even if he play with bot ex6, so no
kennys is faster, more accurate and have better moveOver 30? Man you rarely watch Titan games right? He is sometimes the weakest chain in the team btw... He rarely top frags over the match... But when he does the whole world is like:&Kenny the best&, LOL Ladi never leaks, that's why they are never suprised by his actions because he is always the same, he is always the best.? i loook everymatch he does since epsilon, always first, not his fault if is team is bad
from the last 10 titan matches, kennyS is the top player for titan in 9 of them, and in the only one he isnt, he and apex are the top 2 with apex 30/1/17 and kenny 30/4/19, &He rarely top frags& ok sir. the other thing about 30 frags:
from the last 10 titan matches, kenny did 30+ frags in 5 of them, and 29 in other 2. &you rarely watch Titan games right?& yes you are the one who watchs sir. get to know what you are saying before talking shit everywhere.lol rektAll you know is how he played in new Titan, you really don't know his past do you? I wasn't looking at his latest matches, I was looking overall so you sir STFU because you probably started playing like 3 months ago, and I am playing almost from very start of GO. And then you are talking about latest 10 matches, oh please twat.Post edited

This year's ranking
is so fucking retarded . Guardian for sure shouldve been in top 10 and now retarded xtrfy
gonna put pasha in top10 and im gonna suicideEvery time
HLTV posts these rankings you get people who whine about unfair it is.
It's based almost entirely on stats, there's nothing unfair about cold hard numbers, all they tell is the truth.you do realize that pasha was top2 or even top1 for the first half of 2014? On the latter half he wasn't as good, but was still pretty good, usually 2nd or 3rd best for VP.
Why doesn't he deserve top 10? yes pls, you gonna suicide
-proud sAucer
+based intelligencepasha will be top 6 trust meWERE IS KQLY?KQLYFORNIAxtrfy just went full hltv, never go full hltv. Byali & guardian my ass...its based on numbers, not on personal thoughs, can u get it brah ?Fastest reaction speed of all awpers. (Including Kenny S, who imo is the best awper all round).
Go go guardian.kenny has far faster reactions than any other player. guardian seems to have the fastest flickshots though.GuardiaN shoots faster than kennyS. Post edited
20:03:33Meaning?His bullets travel in lightning speed. He has a faster reaction time. Kenny is faster and it's not even close bruvi loldkennys has better movement and peaks so fast but at holding angles, guardian is a bit faster
but still kennys&guardianLol. KennyS is by far a better AWPer, but his reaction time is not as fast as GuardiaN's. Stop being uninformed. Here is just two clips of many that I have given me the opinion that kenny is far faster.
I know it's only two short clips which is anything but conclusive. If you want me to find more clips I can do, but these two demonstrate a lot of what I've come to expect from both players.Kovac ezunderrated.I expected him quite higher..never liked navi before. but hope they will continue with this lineup and come back stronger than ever.
Edward coolest guy alive!deservedoh my god :O
Olofm under Guardian :O
n1 susliklol kokot 11 wtfWait, this means that Pasha will be ranked higher than GuardiaN? LMAOtry making your own top 20 and see who cares :)VP was better than Na'vi all year around ...
Not surprising.Titan was better than Na'Vi all year around ...
Not surpris- Oh wait, kennyS will be ranked higher than any Na'Vi player, and rightfully so. Well, kennyS has very strong numbers, much better ones than any Na'Vi player. Titan suffered some blows this year, but kennyS was a monster.
According to the same logic, &my logic&, better teams will have more players in the top10 - NiP, fnatic, VP and LCDC will dominate (with the &outsider& kennyS).
It's just what I am trying to say.Well, your logic isn't deductive, but I see what you're trying to say. Titan at big lans (majors)? No such thinghurrr durrrrhe is top10Guardian should be at least top6. If he had better team his stats would be also much more impressive/Post edited

You start following CSGO at the end of 2014 or something??And I though
of 1st April was 3 months away. Nice try hltv. But really, guardian? O.onice :DFOR EVERYONE SAYING GUARDIAN SHOULD BE RANKED HIGHER ON THE LIST, HERE IS GUARDIAN'S STATS AT MAJORS :
Katowice : 0.86
Cologne : 1.04
Dreamhack Winter : 1.10
As you can see, he pretty much choked in the two first major, and performed only for the last one.
I mean, if APEX who has the best ratio out of any player in majors is only 15th, then guardian doesn't deserve to be in the top 10.whole Na`Vi choked, so did helaci!Gratz Guardian!beastguardian should be at #20, hes fucking shit.true Lad!GabardiankennyS,GuardiaN and skadoodle top 3 awpers imoIt it so sad that he is in 11. place..he deserves to be
at better place than ( only example ) Pasha
who will be 10?9?8? no space for pasha Guardian is an amazing player. Should be in top 10.apex over guardian is kinda not right to me but whocares about ranksguardian is 11th in ranking, better than apex, whats wrong?Forgot to add the (11)TOP 5 omg he carry all his team ofcShould have been placed a bit better imo..its based on numbers, not personal thoughs, can u get it guyz ?bullshitgl in 2k15n1no edward in top20 ;{Don't really get this, even if navi wasn't great at the majors.
How can guardian be 11th if none of his teammates are in the top 20.
I get that edward and seized are 20-25, but it's obvious that these 3 carry fairly hard, more than titan carries their worst players or VP carries neo/taz.
So if edward and seized don't get that much credit (no top 20 for edward), guardian should be like top 6 minimum.
Look at pasha's surrounding cast and justify how he had a better year than guardian, there is absolutely no way.
I'm not saying guardian has to be top 5, but if you don't give credit to edward then it has to go somewhere?
This team wins too much to just put him 11th.
Navi is going to have better results than titan, while kennys will be the best player, apex is top 15, and I'm sure the writers will acknowledge ex6 is a better leader than zeus.
So explain how this team wins and places top 4 consistently?
Just doesn't add up.Post edited
21:07:07- You have to look at Pasza's stats mate
It's pretty insane and consistent (only some shaky performances at the end of the year) . Virtus Pro played much more LANs than Na'Vi and won bigger ones
- Guardian chocked at majors.
- Na'Vi had better results than Titan but you can't argue over the fact that Kennys&Guardian and Apex&Edward . Maniac, Ex6 need some really hard carry, when every other player on Na'Vi is just decent. Just like Neo and Taz, they don't need to be hard carried. If they were really bad then i guess Guardian could have a better ranking.
I guess they could have given him the 10th spot but higher would be delusional
Sorry for the long answer i tried to understand and answer your points1. His stats are pretty inconsistent man.
Those first few big tourneys of the year he was great.
He also had a super mediocre star series, a flat out bad DHS, a poor esea s16 with a small asterisk due to the snax thing, awful fragbite masters, terrible eswc when it counted, and a really mediocre esea s17.
So why does this guy get a pass lol?
Neo and taz aren't great but compared to the worst 2 players in most teams, they're really respectable.
He plays with byali and snax, why does he get such a free pass because he can beat up on teams in group stages and play a few great tournaments (and katowice was really great).
2. Guardian was not good at the majors, but keep it in context that he was STILL the best player on his team at 2 of them, and the one where edward was probably better it's really close between the two.
His whole team for the most part was not good aside from DHW, where guardian was also good.
3. You're right, kenny & guardian and apex & edward. I'll add in KQLY was & seized. You're making the case for me.
So if navi produces better results, which in think they have, they are at the bare minimum comparable, who does the credit go to?
Starix and zeus is a marginal difference from ex6 and maniac.
I would have put guardian a little higher, but if you put really heavy weight on the majors I can get that he could be 11th.
I just think edward should be a top 20 player, and because he's not, guardian has to be higher.
Stats are great but they have to be kept in context.
Pasha gets a pass for all the times he is the 3rd-5th best on his team (which happened quite a lot despite his great run early), but if guardian isn't a top 1/2 player every single game his team gets blown out.
That's why stats have to be kept in context, they should factor heavily into the ranking, but I think there is a lack of credit given to navi overall for some of the great runs they had at sltv, dhw, several esea lans (almost beating vp with ceh9) which are a direct results of guardian and edward playing out of their minds.Post edited
22:17:45It's funny because 10 days ago, before, i wouldn't have put pasza on top 10, maybe something like top 15, i thought he was overated because he streams a lot ... And i watched his stats at different tournaments. The thing is he was really great at all majors. I was just trying to give some points to try to balance yours. Guardian is an incredible player, but unfortunatly, ha played kinda bad at majors when Pasza was on top and Virtus Pro (Like I said and you said) has overall better players I dig it, you make some valid points as well, I guess I more disagree with the criteria they useexpectedGuardiaN got exactly 1 in rating in the three majors. Still he gets above players with far better rating and far more tournament wins/better placings at the majors.
This list is not satisfying as it doesn't take enough factors into consideration as LAN & Online, how many events won, placings with team in big events etc.
I think HLTV.org should start to make a new criteria for the next top20 players for 2015.
- Prioritize Majors above minor events
- Prioritize LAN above online events
- Prioritize players overall placings with team
- And ofcourse compare with the statistics that is mainly the data in this ranking.
They are all criterias already bro, i guess some count more than othersAll of that is already done, but the fact that you think that online is even included (while it is clearly stated that it's not) speaks about how much you understand about what's going on...Post edited
22:13:08Im sorry to have missed that Tgwri1s. I still find it hard to believe that you have managed to prioritize players that deliver when it matters the most (majors) belove players that don't.
And I find your tone provoking. Something that doesn't suit HLTV.org very much.QQ, people don't even read the articles and have all these bizare theories about how the rankings are formed. Educate yourself instead of getting upset about the tone in someones message. A rating of 1 in the majors while playing for Na'Vi is impressive. It's funny you think im getting upset about the tone. I just find it childish. Besides, I find it funny that you're implying that it's ok for GuardiaN to underperform at majors because it's the team.
Maybe you should educate yourself instead of lashing out opinions without thinking them trough.
KQLY top 10 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!OK so now will be noone in top 10 from NaVi :( He is best!Gratul&ci&m Kov&cs &Ur! there are 11 or more player for the top10
I think that will come out is edward, I think an injustice that edward is not in the top20Post edited

Do not take me wrong dear GuardiaN fans, i like his game-style also like you so much since . But i'm not s his ratings are enough to take this place for him or there aren't.
A i think jw should be included to top 10.top 2 awp in the world and the best player of NaVihe's really good player, deserved :)&In the 12th place the right one for him?& Kappa(

he should be on 10th place at least)Byali and Guardian both finish 3rd at DH Winter? Don't make sense, hltv. tied for 3rd m8Wat ? 11th ..
Seriously ,not expected :(I hope Guardian will dont care about this stupid ranking, he was carring NaVi whole time and if pasha will be higher rank thats rly unfair for him. Same kennyS, he is good awp player but he is not better then guardian. I hope too, because crying about a deserved ranking isn't very constructive, if only he could teach that to his fansif JW is #1 of this list i'm never using this site again.gl hfgj10. shox
