In most cases when you put an iPhone into Recovery Mode, iTunes will automatically recognize this when you connect the iPhone to your computer. Occasionally, you may find that iTunes does not recognize that the iPhone is in Recovery Mode, or it may not recognize the phone at all. Although this will not happen often, it is more likely to happen if you have not connected your iPhone to the computer in a long time, or if you have recently made changes to your computer.
iPhone Recognized But Not Recovery Mode After putting your iPhone into recovery mode, iTunes should display a dialog box stating that Recovery Mode has been detected and prompting you to restore it to factory settings. If iTunes detects the iPhone, but does not recognize that it is in recovery mode, you can simply restore the device. If iTunes does not launch automatically, launch it yourself and look for the iPhone listed in the left menu. The “Restore” button is located in the “Summary” tab after clicking the iPhone in the left menu. Connection Problems ITunes may not recognize an iPhone if it is insufficiently charged. If the iPhone was low on battery power before putting it in recovery mode, you should wait at least 10 minutes after connecting it to the computer before trying to restore the device. To ensure the iPhone is getting a charge from the computer, and to ensure iTunes can recognize the device, the iPhone should be connected directly into a USB port on the computer using the cable it shipped with. If iTunes still hasn’t detected the iPhone after 10 minutes, disconnect all non-essential USB devices from the computer, restart it and try again.
USB Driver If iTunes does not recognize the iPhone, there could be an issue with the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver. The Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is in the “Universal Serial Bus Controllers” section of the Windows Device Manger. To see if it is working properly, connect the iPhone to your computer and quit iTunes if it launches automatically. To find the Device Manager, click the &Start& menu, right-click &Computer& and select &Properties.& If the driver is not present, or if there is a red or yellow indicator on it, remove and reinstall iTunes. Apple Mobile Device Support If iTunes does not recognize your iPhone, ensure that Apple Mobile Device Support is installed on the computer. In Windows 7 you can see whether it is from the Control Panel by clicking “Uninstall a Program.” If Apple Mobile Device Support is installed, it should be in this list of installed programs. If it is not there, you should remove iTunes, QuickTime, Apple Software Update and Apple Application Support. You can then reinstall iTunes /itunes.
