Recent updates
Hello Chasers! We pushed out a small patch today that will hopefully fix the recent issues with Steam cloud synchronization. Hope it helps!
We also have some pretty exciting news:
If you own a Wii U and a copy of Runbow, you can download her for free! The game itself will also be on sale for a special discount price.
23 February
We're ready to unleash the next update that makes some noteworthy graphical improvements and adds an Adventure mode for Milla. Let's see how this goes!
If you would like to keep playing the original version of the game with only Lilac and Carol's Adventure modes, select &1.20.4 - Right before the Milla Adventure update& in the BETAS tab. (Right-click Freedom Planet in your Library and select Properties.)
The following is a compilation of all of the most significant changes between the last public release and this one.
- Milla is now available to play in Adventure mode. She has several new cutscenes in addition to an altered ending sequence to accommodate the fact that she's the one fighting Brevon.
- Because of Milla being playable in Adventure mode, it now has an identical character selection screen as Classic mode once she has been unlocked.
- In Final Dreadnought 3, the stage ends for Milla when she crosses under the tube where the Kingdom Stone was, instead of the right side of the room. This is to accommodate for the cutscene that now takes place here in Adventure mode and will likely result in faster clear times (by less than a second, but still notable).
- Milla no longer has to deal with the crosshairs in the red hallway before the final boss.
- The required crystals for the Gem Hoarder achievement has been lowered from 7000 to 6000.
- The dialog cuts from the Wii U version have been carried over. Only the cutscene break between Relic Maze and Fortune Night is affected, plus one line after Fortune Night. See &Adventure Mode dialog cuts& for details.
Tweaks:
- Improved the shading on characters and enemies that were lacking it including Mayor Zao, Aqua Tunnel's boss and various enemies.
- In Milla's cutscene before Relic Maze, it's no longer possible for her to get a 1up by collecting the crystals she runs over. The crystals still count towards your total crystal count, however.
- In the intro cutscene after Brevon says &My turn,& the frequency of his blade noises has been reduced a bit.
- The player now regenerates life during the Battle Glacier schmup on Easy and Casual.
Fixes:
- Carol's hitboxes on her attacks would sometimes not register.
- In Fortune Night as Carol, pausing the game in the area between defeating the midboss and entering the mall would make the music fade out indefinitely.
- In Final Dreadnought 3, the end boss's hitbox would linger after death, meaning that players with a fire shield would repeatedly hear the hit sound if they overlapped the hitbox during the cutscene.
- The game could be paused during the score tally in Final Dreadnought 4 as Milla, causing the results screen to glitch out.
- Pausing and selecting Next Stage during the cutscene where the heroes talk to Gong in Shang Tu Palace would make the music in Jade Creek fail to load.
- Pausing and select Skip Scene in the cutscene where Lilac is being healed in Shang Tu Palace would cause the invincibility music to play in Pangu Lagoon instead of the normal stage theme.
- Exiting a stage during Milla's Super Shield Burst would make other characters unable to climb ladders until she was either selected again or the game was restarted.
- Death counter on the file select screen has been increased to allow up to four digits instead of two.
- Patched up all the holes in the ceiling in Trap Hideout.
- In Fortune Night, rolling arches in the first section would sometimes make it impossible for Milla to land on the ground when touched during her hover move.
- Dragon Valley's score tally now properly activates if you somehow skip the end boss.
Adventure Mode dialog cuts:
- The treehouse movie scene has been shortened significantly for Lilac and Carol. (Unessential filler)
- The &space cooties& dialog where Lilac explains the origin of dragons has been cut. It now simply jumps to Carol's question about why aliens are interested in Avalice. (Unnecessary exposition since Zao basically says the same stuff later on)
- Torque's tent scene now fades out when the girls do their victory animation. (Torque's request to keep their mission a secret never comes into play during the story. The rest is unessential filler)
- In the Zao dinner scene, removed Lilac's comment on how Milla and Carol both agree on something for once. (References an event in the story that was cut early in development)
“Freedom Planet is an emotional, comedic and fun fast-paced platformer that will keep you on your toes and wary of incoming dangers.”
5/5 –
“Freedom Planet is well-written love letter to the sixteen-bit era, reminding players of the power of the action-platformer. Expect to be serenaded by the splendid soundtrack.”
81/100 –
“Freedom Planet is a criminally underrated game and a shining example of just how good a retro platformer can feel even in 2015...”
4.5/5 –

The levels drag on sometimes, and some random difficulty spikes, and the voice acting can be cringeworthy, but if you enjoy the original Sonic Trilogy then you will enjoy this.
This is the best money I've ever spent. It reminds me of the old sonic from genisis. Great story and soundtrack, definitley worth picking up.
Love the game so far. Very fun. Plays like a mix of Sonic (from the Genesis/Mega Drive) and Mega Man games. One tiny issue with the game is some of the voice acting. Honestly though, in some cutscenes it rocks and in others...it is awkward. Don't get me wrong! I love this game to death....just gotta find more time to actually sit down and finish it!
I bought this game after watching it on SGDQ. HOW DID I NOT KNOW A GOOD SONIC GAME WAS MADE IN THE LAST 15 YEARS?!?!This game is amazing: The level design, combat, music, VA, its all flawless. If I was SEGA I'd be handing these guys a blank check and begging them to make a sonic game.Pros:+Basically sonic before it started to suck+Awesome combat+Great music+Multiple characters+Awesome plot+Milla+Milla's flutter ears+Milla digging+More MillaCons:*SPOILER WARNING*- The main villian turns Milla into a monster and you have to fight her. I appreciate the viscious beatdown Lilac gives him afterward, but there's no option to take a chainsaw to his *Censored*(Would much appreciate this as DLC or a feature in the sequel)11/10 would Milla again.
It feels like the high speed platform Sonic should've been, with elements mixed in from other games to make it one of my all time favorite platformer games
The only good Sonic game in years.ProsGood level DesignMultiple CharactersMovement options everywhereMilla (LOOK AT HER SHES SO CYOOT)Great music.Good Replayability (You won't get bored with this game)About a 15 hour game if you play all of the characters (and aren't a speedrunner)_________________________________________________________________________CONSLife system with no punishment aspect. (Places you at the previous checkpoint after a continue.)_________________________________________________________________________Overall Score 10/10. But seriously though Galaxy Trail, Send us back to the start of the area if we use a continue.

I don't know what to say other than it was free. I tried it. It was awful.
I used to like this game, but the developer's decisions have pretty much been a complete &???? you& to fans of my type. The gameplay is good, and so are the graphics, but the story? the characters?...you'll see for yourself. The story at one point was very, very good. Good as in, deep. Then Strife said &NOPE, EVERYONE SAYS THE STORY SUCKS, TIME TO CUT STUFF OUT& and ruins everything by taking out scenes that show character development and what they do in their free time. It's a shame, really. Now plot holes galore! But then Cutman Strife took it a step further by NEARLY RETCONNING EVERYTHING for the sequel. NO. I LIKED THE OLD STORY, I WANT IT TO STAY THAT WAY.Lilac goes fast, has no character aside from &I GOTTA SAVE THE ????ING WORLD!!!!1!& and speedrunners love her. Except, FP speedrunners don't speedrun. They just exploit a thing called &zipping& where you go through walls and it's stupid. She's a complete ????? in story mode and I hate her even more because of Retcon Planet 2's announcement.Carol is the only playable character I like. She's a cool cat that can ride a motorcycle that defies all physics! But speedrunners hate her unlike the other two playables. Why? Apparently to them she sucks when in reality, she's the most balanced and stable of the three.Milla... oh ????ing hell. I hate her with a passion. While not personality-wise, in fact, I would find her to be quite a nice friend, she gets away with way too much in story mode I'm willing to call her a Mary Sue. Lilac at least gets severely punished, while Carol goes through ACTUAL CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, Milla gets away with practically everything because everyone loves dogs, right? No. I hate dogs. Except for their taste. Her gameplay is broken beyond belief. She gets cubes that are incredibly strong, a reflecting shield, and a flutter jump. I'm not going to say anything else on her because I'll probably get tons of bashing for not liking the doggy. So we were promised two other playable characters, Torque and Spade, for reaching Kickstarter goals. Did we get them? ???? NO! Instead of them being FREE DLC like promised, what we get in exchange is &Imma make games for them and only the backers get the game for free!1! :D&Yeah, I kinda WANTED that DLC.Basically, what I'm trying to say is, while the game itself is good, I don't reccommend it because Strife doesn't deserve another dollar for the amount of betrayal from his fans.Does Strife listen to us? No. He asks SONIC RETRO, A SONIC SITE, for help, instead of, I DUNNO, YOUR OWN ????ING FANS?!Did Strife keep his promises? No. He's REMOVING THE PLANNED DLC for ALMOST NO REASON aside from &I can't program, so I'll make another game so I can get money from it.&So what has Strife done for the fans? Made Retcon Planet 2, where Lilac becomes a goat/dragon hybrid, Carol barely gets changed at all, Milla gets made more broken, the villains look so ????ing generic you can still see some of the cardboard from when they cut them out, and taking the series in a way I don't want. What do I want from a series like this?-a better art style, which they did get, but thanks to how Lilac looks it's already ruined-getting rid of &zipping& and making the game more combat-oriented than GOTTA GO FAST!11!!-more character development-LISTENING TO YOUR FANS-KEPT PROMISESI gotta go. The more I talk about this, the worse I become.KEEP YOUR ????ING PROMISES ASSHAT
This game just screams out the Genesis titles and Sega Saturn titles of Sonic, This game has a great story, Cool soundtrack, Great playable characters and their gameplay, Good gameplay, Great voice acting and the best game I would recommend you playing it!This game is a solid 10/10!
If you're expecting Sonic, it's similar but different. Probably the best indie platformer I've ever played, and nearly a 10/10.

I went into this game thinking it was &pretty good& from what I've heard about it. Definitely liked the soundtrack from what little I heard before playing. So, I decided to wait for a little while until the Summer Sale came around. After playing… I can't get this game out of my head. The music, the levels, the bosses–heck, even the dialogue in the game, as much as some people might consider it a negative (personally, I found it a bit charming for all but some of the bits at the end of the game). Never was one for 2D platformers when I was growing up, and I've spent a lot more time playing 3D platformers over the span of my life. In spite of all that, I feel as though *I* can understand the love and care that went into this game from everyone at GalaxyTrail. A level of adoration that extends far beyond &an ascended Sonic fangame&, and I'm not talking about similarities to other Sega Genesis games. In short, despite my first run only bringing me up to four hours of total game time, I knew then that this is easily one of my favorite games of all time. It's not something I could have possibly known just from the music, just from other people's gameplay… This game is truly something that has to be experienced.I give this game nothing less than my wholehearted praise, so much so that, if I had known how much I'd love this, I'd have paid full price for the game. So, instead, I want to buy the soundtrack and a t-shirt to make up for it as I eagerly wait for the sequel. :p

Freedom Planet is a game well worth it's price if you were a fan of older Sonic games but wanted to see it expanded upon.To keep it short, the game's strengths are it's stage designs, music, and character choices. The music is great to listen to, the stages are fun to run though but also explore around with bosses that are tough, and you have several characters to choose from. Lilac a water dragon who can quickly dash around, Carol a wall climbing cat who can ride around in a motorcycle, and Milla a shield and block throwing dog who gives you a different slower pace. The game's biggest weakness has to be the story. WHile I liked it's cheesy Saturday Morning feel, it stretched out in the early part and seems rushed at the end. It also doesn't put much emphasis on explaining the world around you, requiring you to take in quite a bit and assume or figureo ut what people are talking about. Still the upside is that you can either play Classic to avoid the cutscenes all together or play Adventure Mode and skip the cutscenes you don't want to see.Freedom Planet is by no means a perfect game but it's a really fun trip back to fast side scrolling adventures. It's well worth the buy!

Simply put: I love this game. It's so fun, and while it has a lot of Sonic elements, at no point did it feel like a clone of Sonic. It has enough of a blend of both original ideas, and stuff found in other platformers to keep it feeling fresh. I did however, have some minor issues with the momentum mechanics. Basically, the momentum in this game functions about as well as it did in Sonic 4, whereas you can easily walk up a steep slope or a loop-da-loop at a walking pace. Other than that, the gameplay is great. The story is... Alrght. While it isn't bad at all, it certainly isn't super great. It serves as a good way to understand why you're doing the stuff you do, and it definitely has its moments. And if you don't care about story, you can always choose &classic mode& when starting your singleplayer adventure, which basically removes all story cutscenes so that you can just simply play the game. Overall it's an amazing game if you like classic platformers, and if you're a fan of the Sonic games.

A really great platforming experience that's reminiscent of the Sega Genesis era of 16 bit games. It's got great replay value with a host of characters to try and master, fantastic level and boss design, a rocking soundtrack, and great pixel art that really puts it on top of the indie nostalgic platformer pile and distinguishes it from its peers. I prefer this to Shovel Knight, if that's an endorsement that matters to you.

Though clearly Freedom Planet is a tribute of high effort, I can't find enough to differentiate this game from the various (mostly Sonic and other Sega Genesis era copycats) sources to which it so clearly pays homage. Despite the absence of original themes or mechanics, there is a lot of heart and it handles the terrain, boss fights and enemy placement with a fair balance of difficulty and pattern-learning. If you love Sonic clones, grab this on sale!
