A rewarding future for athletes?
19:37Song Yi Ping
Since the Ministry of Community Development was officially renamed the Ministry of Community Development and Sports on April 1 last year, the government has set clear goals to promote the development of sports to make Singapore a sporting nation.
It is timely to stress the importance of sports. With the economy on track and Singaporeans enjoying more affluence, the desire to have a better quality of life is understandable. Sports no doubt will have a role to play in this aspect.
Participation in sporting events will help us lead a more healthy lifestyle. “Health is wealth” is an advice that everyone is familiar with. Indeed, without good health and fitness, one will not be able to realise any great aspirations or ambitions which one may have.
Sports also have an unique ability to unite people. One day, should a Singaporean be able to bring home a gold medal from the Olympics, the joy and pride Singaporeans experience as a nation would be immeasuarable.
Of course, tremendous manpower and resources are needed to attain the goal of a sporting nation. However, if everyone is convinced of the value of sports, we should work together as one to help achieve this aim.
As a small nation with scarce human resources, it is no easy task to nurture an Olympic or world champion. Still, this is not a case of “mission impossible”. What is critical is that we must work towards the same objective with determination, conviction and the right approach.
Taking part in sports can help one become active, develop a strong will, a readiness to strive hard and accept challenges, and a never-say-die attitude. These are values that offer lifelong benefit, even if an athlete fails eventually to make the dream of becoming an Olympic gold medalist or world champion come true.
The recent proposal to set up a sports school in 2003 by a sub-committee of the Committee on Sporting Singapore, aims to provide young and talented athletes who are likely to shine in the sporting arena, the best care, training and support.
The idea of the sub-committee on “Enhancing the Athletes’ Support Infrastructure”, is to provide accommodation to allow gifted athletes to study and train under one roof, thus saving them the time that would be wasted on travelling.
It is certainly a good suggestion. But the sub-committee must develop parents’ confidence in the school, and get rid of wrong perceptions about sports or the school that some people may have. It also has to be careful in its admission criteria, to make sure every student receives excellent training.
The “kiasu” mentality is doubtless common among Singaporean parents. If their children are good enough for an elite school, would they opt for a sports school instead? This is probably the toughest challenge for the sub-committee.
By and large, parents hope their children would have a career in an established profession. For them to agree to their children persuing a career in sports may be unthinkable. The traditional mindset will certainly not change overnight.
However, in countries such as the United States and Australia, the sports industry is a very lucrative one. The money professional sportsmen or sportswomen make, is certainly no less than specialist doctors, lawyers or bankers.
We have our own examples too. Famed paddler Jing Junhong and former soccer star Fandi Ahmad have both made a name for themselves. They have also received enough in return and do not have to worry about their livelihood.
The government should “make good use” of these household names to promote sports and make people aware of our potential in developing sports. It should also help create a lifelong career path for young people w11them have a go at it, and give them the biggest possible support!

Sixty-three years old and retired from a career as a welder, Jim Crawford doesn't have much use for the Internet. The only time he goes online is to read through the automotive listings in the office of a local online auction company. If he sees something he likes, he says, he asks his mechanic to bid on it for him.Crawford is far from alone: About 15 percent of Americans older than 18 don't use the Internet, according to a study released in September by the Pew Internet & American Life Project. An additional 9 percent use it only outside the home. They make up a shrinking, but not insignificant, segment of the population. And the gap between them and our increasingly digitized society is growing wider every day.“There is a group of Americans being left behind as technology advances without them,” Lawrence E.Strickling, head of Commerce Department's National Telecommunications and Information Administration, told an audience at the Brookings Institution recently.
These people are being left out even as access to broadband—Internet service provided by cable, fiber, DSL and other high-speed networks, as opposed to the older, slower dial-up service—has expanded dramatically in the past 20 years.Because of a national infrastructure upgrade that Strickling compares to the rural electrification effort of the 1930s, well over 90 percent of U.S.households are either wired for high-speed broadband or can get high-speed wireless access. But actual adoption of that service lags behind availability: As of October 2012, the NTIA found that 72.9 percent of homes used broadband Internet service. That's remarkable growth from 2000, when only 4 percent of homes used broadband, but it still indicates a significant gap.
So who are these Americans who remain disconnected from the online world? “They are disproportionately older,” says Kathryn Zickuhr, who wrote the Pew study, According to the survey, which was done in Mary, 49 percent of non-Internet users are older than 65.They also are, in general, less educated.Although nearly everyone in the United States with a college degree is online, 41 percent of adults without a high school diploma are offline.
The Pew survey asked these people why they don't go online.Perhaps surprisingly, cost wasn't the most common answer. The most prevalent reason, given by 34 percent of offline respondents, was that the Internet is not relevant to them.A slightly smaller group, 32 percent, cited problems with using the technology: They said that getting online was difficult or frustrating, or that they were worried about issues such as privacy or hackers.Nineteen percent of non-users cited concerns about the expense of owning a computer or paying for an Internet connection.
Most policymakers would disagree with that sense of irrelevance. They point out that people who aren't online have a harder time accessing vital services such as Medicare and Medicaid or the new health-care exchanges created under President Obama's health-care law. They can't perform useful daily functions that most Americans take for granted, such as looking up directions when traveling, using e-mail for speedy written correspondence, or being able to see and talk with faraway friends or relatives via Skype or FaceTime. They can't easily search for competitive prices for housing, cars, appliances or other goods.Perhaps most importantly, they are at a major disadvantage when looking for a job: NTIA statistics show that 73 percent of unemployed Internet users reported going online to look for work.
The Pew study found that only 14 percent of offline adults were previous Internet users. There's good reason to believe if the rest of them tried it, they would find the service rewarding rather than irrelevant.Seeta Pena Gangadharan, a senior research fellow at the New America Foundation's Open Technology Institute, described “intergenerational interactions between seniors who were timid and concerned about going online” and younger relatives.Seniors often rely on grandchildren to assist them, she says, then realize they need to learn how to use the technology themselves when those family members move away.A program in the D.C.area funded by the America Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Foundation and administered by Family Matters of Greater Washington seemed to confirm that point.Using an established social service organization, it distributed iPads and offered computer classes as well as discounted home Internet service to seniors, many of whom had never online. Two months into the pilot program this summer, only five of original 55 participants had dropped out.
The advent of smartphones is also helping to narrow the Internet gap, says Lee Rainie, director of Pew's Internet project. At a Washington Post forum last week, he said the relatively fast and inexpensive devices, which provide Internet connection via cellphone networks, have had a particularly positive effect on African American and Latino communities.
What kind of rhetorical device is used in the statement “There is a group of Americans being left behind as technology advances without them”?
A.Contrast.
B.Metaphor.
C.Exaggeration.
D.Personification.
What is the role of the 3rd paragraph in the development of the topic?
A.Introducing the issue.
B.Describing the problem.
C.Showing the findings.
D.Turning to a new topic.
According to most policymakers, Internet can provide the following EXCEPT______
A.medical information.
B.maps and directions.
C.long-distance communication.
D.job-hunting information.
It can be learned from the 6th paragraph that
A.old people are surprisingly willing to learn new things.
B.people should be both mentally and physically independent.
C.many non-users of Internet have never used the Internet.
D.social service organizations play important roles in helping the old.
What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Old people are in great need of improving their computer skills.
B.The gap between those who use Internet and those who don't is widening.
C.Hackers and privacy problems hinder the development of Internet.
D.The young should help the old grasp the use of Internet.
A.allow union to organize campaign in the business.
B.prevent employers from interfering with union's work.
C.ensure a friendlier union-employer relationship.
D.protect the union members' rights more easily.
It can be learnt from Chief Justice John G.Roberts Jr.that____________
A.the legitimacy of card-check elections should be reconsidered.
B.the card-check election is actually beneficial to the union.
C.he doesn't see the influence of the way of election to the union.
D.the employer can gain some benefit from the card-check election.
In “Messenger said it should be clear that the casino had given the union a thing of value”, “a thing of value” is used as a__________
A.metaphor.
B.contrast.
C.metonymy.
What does the words “with caveats” in Paragraph Six mean?
A.On condition.
B.No doubt.
C.As usual.
D.With pleasure.
Which of the following best describes the author's development of argument?
A.Introducing the issue→providing background information→citing different opinions on the issue.
B.Raising a topic for discussion→analysing the problem→giving the solution.
C.Offering the final solution→explaining how the solution was reached→describing the effect of the solution.
D.Bringing about the topic→comparing supportive and protesting opinions→showing the author's opinion.
A.comfort shouldn't be the first factor to consider when choosing shoes.
B.being barefoot is a good treatment for those with knee problems.
C.expensive shoes aren't always worth a large amount of money.
D.the way how a person walks may cause pain to their feet.
Which of the following statements is CORRECT about Birkenstock sandals?
A.Not everybody feels they are comfortable shoes.
B.They may do damage to some people's knees.
C.They make comfort as one of the goals in designing.
D.They can help people form a good habit of walking.
Which of the following statements contains an exaggeration?
A.You know what they say about if the shoe fits...
B.I hear this question 20 times a day...
C.However, minimalist shoes are not right for everyone.
D...picture young children on ice skates...
What is Selene Parekh's answer to the best shoes to wear?
A.Shoes that are customized to individuals.
B.Shoes that fit to a person's wear pattern.
C.Shoes that are both cheap and comfortable.
D.Shoes that cause no pressure to the feet.
It can be learned from the passage that people having high-arch feet would
A.find shoes with arch support more comfortable.
B.see more wear on the inner part of the sole.
C.suffer more injury from wearing minimalist shoes.
D.avoid wearing clogs without customarized inserts.
A.holidays like Thanksgiving make people forgetful.
B.family members always poke unkind comments toward each other.
C.forgetting is important to human experiences.
D.cognitive experts tell us the meaning of the world.
Which of the following words is used literally, NOT metaphorically?
A.Dwell (Paragraph One).
B.Festive (Paragraph Two).
C.Avalanche (Paragraph Four).
D.Forest (Paragraph Four).
According to the passage, human's mechanism of forgetting is under threat in the digital age because
A.the mechanism of forgetting is no longer with us in this age.
B.dealing with Facebook messages, e-mails, tweets etc.keeps us occupied.
C.advanced digital tools help us decide what to forget.
D.a comprehensive digital memory constantly reminds us of the past.

C.Revealing a problem→switching to similar ones in the past→analyzing similarities between past and present.
D.Narrating a story→commenting on the story→inviting an open discussion.

A.A bundle of energy.(Paragraph Two)
B.Enormous strides.(Paragraph Four)
C.This unseen but deadly enemy.(Paragraph Four)
D.The kings and queens.(Paragraph Five)
Which of the following factors may NOT be the cause of Nathan Rothschild's death?
A.Failure to get timely treatment.
B.A fatal wound on his back.
C.Bacterial infection.
D.Lack of good medicine and operation technique.

A.The zealous religious belief of the Jews and the Muslims delayed their adoption of industrial innovation.
B.The Jews and the Muslims were often accused of conspiracy because their low disease and death rates were seen as suspicious.
C.No washable underclothing was available for the Jews and the Muslims that time.
D.The Jews and the Muslims had other unhealthy habits despite their cleanliness.
Which of the following statements is most consistent with the author's attitude?
A.Improvement in nutrition was easier to achieve than provision of better medicine and washable underclothing.
B.No doctor at that time could have saved the life of Nathan after the boil was found.
C.Effective medicine played a more important role in reducing disease and death than better hygiene and nutrition.
D.The industrial revolution has not improved the health of ordinary people as much as the rich.
What is the main idea of this passage?
A.The progress of medicine has improved the health of ordinary people to the level of the rich in the 19th century.
B.The industrial revolution reduced disease and death by providing better medicine, washable fabric and richer nutrition.
C.Improvements in medicine, personal hygiene and nutrition together greatly improved people's health and life expectancy.
D.Our knowledge about diseases and nutrition has greatly improved since the 19th century.

The following statements are consistent with Dr.Myrskyla's view about demographic transition EXCEPT that
A.fertility rates in Canada don't rise because of the lack of female-friendly employment policies.
B.some countries experience another transition: fertility rate rises as they become more developed.
C.rising female employment does not always result in reduced reproductive output.
D.HDI is an important indicator for a country's level of development.
What is the role of the 4th paragraph in the development of the topic?
A.To illustrate that fertility rates in some highly developed countries began to rise.
B.To show that countries like Canada and Japan remain low fertility rates.
C.To explain how demographic transition occurred between the 1970s and 2005.
D.To indicate that the trend of HDI is unrelated to the rise or fall of fertility rates.
因此选[A]。
What does the word “uptick” at the end of the 5th paragraph refer to?
A.Longer life expectancy.
B.Rising survivability of children.
C.More and more women pursuing their own career.
D.Increasing fertility rates in countries with HDI above 0.9.
