Everywhere the oddball Super Guppy flies, it draws a crowd — even at NASA Langley Research Center, whose engineers and technicians have seen plenty of &oddball& over decades of aeronautics and space research.But the Super Guppy is a giant, whale-shaped cargo plane so visually arresting its mere presence in the NASA Langley hangar was a draw. And when its bulbous nose unhinged like a sideways clamshell, right to left, taking the entire cockpit with it, cellphone cameras began clicking away.

And within its vast cargo bay — which stretches 25 feet wide by 25 feet high and 111 feet in length — the Super Guppy was carrying a small portion of another aircraft from Long Beach, Calif., that will undergo testing at the Hampton research center.That second aircraft, called a hybrid- or blended-wing body, is even more fanciful than the Guppy, with the sleek, stream-lined shape of a manta ray.It's that futuristic blended-wing aircraft, still in development by NASA and Boeing, that excited Master Sgt.
