Please answer all of the following diagnostic questions in a numbered list in your very next reply (no need to quote this post):
1. What is the full name of your installed anti-virus application or security suite and
when (approx. date) does your current subscription expire?& What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender) are installed?& What third-party firewall (if any)?
2. Has a(nother) Norton application or a McAfee application EVER been installed on the computer?
3. Did a Norton free-trial or a McAfee free-trial [pick one] come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it? (Doesn't matter if you never used or Activated it.)
4. Open Add/Remove Programs & make sure the Show Updates box at the top is checked (and leave it checked); then select the
Name option in the Sort by box on the right. Now scroll down & tell me if ALL of the following updates are listed?
&&& o KB2598479, KB2631813,
[which is superseded by KB2585542]; KB2618444, KB2633171, KB2639417, KB2620712, KB2618451 & KB971029
Most will be displayed as Security Update for Windows XP followed by the KB number in parentheses.
If IE8 is installed,&one will be displayed as Security Update for Windows Internet Explorer 8 followed by the KB number in parentheses.
5. Is Firefox, Chrome or any other alternate browser installed?
6. Are you in the habit of using "Registry cleaners" (e.g., Registry M System M RegC RegClean P Advanced SystemC AVG PC TuneUp; Norton Registry C PCTools O SpeedUpMyPC; CCleaner)?
7. Have you ever had occasion to do a
(or a clean install) of WinXP for any reason?

1.& McAfee Security C expire 2/1/2013; no other anti- firewall-McAfee
2.& No other Norton or McAffee application installed.
3.& Free trail - McAfee BUT This was on the original hard drive which replaced in 2010.& By that time the free trial expired and was not transferred to the new HD.
4.& KB2618444 is shown under IE 8 updates.& KB980436, KB2585542 (which is causing the problem) and KB971029
do not appear in updates.& The others do appear.
5.& At one time Chrome was installed but deleted when the problem with KB2585542 started.
6.& Use of Registry cleaners-NOT used.
7.& Repair install-never used.

1a. When (approx. date) was McAfee Security Center (any version) first installed?
1b. Has your McAfee Security Center subscription EVER expired, if only for a day or two?
2. What, if any,&anti-virus application was installed before you installed McAfee Security Center, was your subscription still current, and did you uninstall it before you installed McAfee Security Center?
3a. When (approx. date) did you purchase the computer?
3b. Did you replace the HDD & then do a clean install of WinXP before or after 10 August 2010?
3c. Did WinXP come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it and did you use the OEM discs that came with the computer to do the clean install in 2010 (when you replaced the HDD)?
4. Is Security Update for Windows XP (KB980436) listed in Add/Remove Program? [1]
Comment: The "not a valid window image" error is typically a symptom of a hijackware infection. Ditto if KB971029 was never offered to your computer by Windows Update.

[1] WinXP was&reinstalled on 12/28/09 by local computer repair store.
[2] KB960225 is listed as installed 12/29/09 as well as KB980436.
A1. Did the "local computer repair store" use the discs that came with your Dell computer to reinstall WinXP on 28 December 2009?
A2a. So&KB980436 is listed in Add/Remove Programs (contrary&what one of your previous replies impled), is that correct?
A2b. Were KB960225 and KB980436 both installed on 29 December 2009 (as your previous reply implies) or was KB980436 installed later?
A2c. If KB980436 was installed later, when (exact date) was it installed according to Add/Remove Programs?

First sorry for the late reply.
But before I answer your questions above, let me make a few further observations.
1. after going through your list of updates twice or more at this point this is what I am absoluttely certin of:
KB&&&&&&&&&&&& installed
960225&&&& 12/29/2009
971029&&&& can NOT find as installed
980436&&&&& 8/11/2010
2585542&&& 1/19/2012&& must uninstall in order to have PC work properly. Reinstalls itself after each total shut down.
2598479&&&& 1/11/2012 probably a later date since went to restore back to 1/9/2012 to get rid of the "bad image" message.
2618444&&& 12/14/2011
2618451&&&& 12/14/2011
2620712&&&& 12/14/2011
2631813&&&& 1/11/2012& see explanation for 2598479
2633171&&&& 12/14/2011
2639417&&&& 12/14/2011
Since this message "bad image" related to System32, I went to that file.& This file shows winhttp(2).dll, winhttp(4).dll AND winhttp.dll.& All on C drive.& I have a D drive that Dell installed to provide real time back-up.& This drive got disconnect when
the new HD was installed.& However I never deleted the files from "D" and found that System32 folder showed only one file labeled as winhttp.dll.& Could the problem lie in "C" drive showing winhttp(2) and (4)????
Back to your questions:
A1& reinstall WinXP using their disks.
A2a& KB980436&IS listed on Add/Rmove.& See above.
A2b& KB960225 was installed 12/29/2009.& KB980436 (I assume you mean 908 and not 908) installed 8/11/2010.
A2c& KB980436 was installed 8/11/2010.
I really think the problem lies in the multiple "winhttp" files as mentioned above but I will leave that thought up to you as an expert.
This KB2585542 problem is driving me nuts and I would hate to reformat the HD, reinstall WinXP and all programs again.& Please find a simple solution.& Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!

[Sorry about the typos.]
Tip: Ideally, you would never, EVER use System Restore to "undo" an update, Service Pack, or IE upgrade (which often leaves the system in a "confused" or "torn" state)!& Instead, uninstall the update, Service Pack, and/or IE upgrade & reboot. If that doesn't
correct the problem, then try System Restore.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If (a) neither KB2585542 nor KB971029 is currenly&listed in Add/Remove P and (b) you got a
winhttp.dll is not a valid window image error/crash&after you installed KB2585542; and (c) Chrome crashed after you installed KB2585542, chances are you're seeing the effects of an ongoing&hijackware infection, possibly compounded by a W32/Alureon-variant
rootkit infection.
OPTION A: For home users, visit the Microsoft
for resources and tools to keep your PC safe and healthy.& If you are having issues with installing the update itself, visit
for resources and tools to keep your PC updated with the latest updates.&
OPTION B: If you reside in the US (only!), you can avail yourself of Premium Support (i.e., paid) to deal with the infections here:
If you do NOT reside in the US, see my colleague Enzo's "sticky" (albeit somewhat outdated) post:
OPTION C (Recommended): See...
Follow the instructions in this post of mine in another forum (to-the-letter &
去网上或者你朋友的电脑复制一个d3dx9_24.dll 到C:\WINDOWS\system32再开始--运行 输入regsvr32 d3dx9_24.dll 确定
再试试重装下游戏
