News that NHS Property Services Ltd has appointed the contractor to build Harborough's new hospital has been warmly welcomed by a local health campaigner.
But, he says, the very wording of the press release that has been sent out by NHS bosses heralding the agreement with Morgan Sindall of Birmingham as the contractor worryingly raises yet more questions.
Liberal Democrat councillor Phil Knowles gave a stark message to NHS bosses during a BBC interview today - sort out the problems at St Luke's Hospital and and sort them now. or step aside and let someone who can deliver the scheme take over the project.
The endoscopy/minor procedure unit at St Luke's in Market Harborough was finally opened after lengthy delays and seemingly hundreds of thousands of pounds over estimated costs.
Today, Liberal Democrat Leader and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg launched the Liberal Democrats' 2014 European election campaign. The launch took place in Colchester at a rally with activists and supporters, followed by a public town hall-style Q&A session hosted by Heart FM.
Speaking at the launch event, Nick Clegg said:
A 'children crossing' road sign has been left lying on the roadside for well over a month despite the best efforts of Liberal Democrat councillors to get it put back in place. They have several times told Leicestershire County Council that this sign is no longer fixed where it should be in the grass verge. The sign needs to be in place to warn drivers in this busy area that children and adults cross Roman Way at this point to reach the nearby play area.
Three local Liberal Democrat councillors - Barbara Johnson, Sarah Hill and Phil Knowles - have launched a petition calling on the NHS to protect the Market Harborough Coventry Road Hospital war memorial portico, to move it safely to an agreed new home and to secure the funding for its future upkeep.
"The NHS, we feel, needs to accept its responsibilities in this matter," they say. "We are making the petition available both in paper form and electronically and hope that everyone will sign to show their support for this campaign. The NHS may feel they can ignore the matter and it will simply go away, perhaps a significant number of signatures showing the public feeling in what is the centenary commemoration year of Word War I will force the message home."
NHS England senior executive David Sharp has outlined the projected dates for Market Harborough's new hospital.
Speaking as a guest at a Harborough District Council panel meeting on this evening, he confirmed that the doors of the unit should be opened in January 2016 with the first spade having been put in the ground to signify the start of construction in September 2014.
Lib Dem Cllr Phil Knowles, who has been at the forefront of the community's hospital campaign for over 25 years, addressed the meeting and thanked David Sharp for his indication of a definite date when the long-awaited, much-delayed, unit will finally be open to serve the community.
Cllr Knowles said: "Mr Sharp is fully aware of the many disappointments and broken promises over so many years. The people of Harborough deserve better, so I am sure that he will have checked every detail of the plan unveiled at the meeting. There is no doubt that the latest delay is disappointing, but finally we do now seem to have the basis of a firm commitment to build and of a willingness to keep the community and council informed .
"Mr Sharp is intending to accept invitations to come to meetings in Harborough on a regular basis and update us as the scheme progresses. For my part I will do what I have done for so long: I will keep pushing and campaigning until the community has the facility that residents need.
"The new Harborough hospital is an investment in healthcare for the 21st century. It will make a positive contribution not only to Market Harborough but to wider service provision, as it offers the opportunity to carry out more procedures in the town so people do not have to travel to Leicester or Kettering."
Market Harborough councillors Sarah Hill, Phil Knowles and Barbara Johnson have backed campaigners calling for better access to the London platform at Market Harborough railway station.
At present you have to climb steps to reach it, and if you cannot manage them then you have to wait to be taken across the tracks by station staff.
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg used his speech to Liberal Democrat conference to announce that all pupils at infant schools in England are to get free school lunches from September 2014, with equivalent funding for Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
In addition, disadvantaged students at sixth form colleges and further education colleges in England will also be eligible for free school meals also from next September. Money is also being provided for Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, but as education is a devolved issue, it will be up to those running schools there to decide whether to spend the money on free lunches.
