before.
I had i talled a program that gives different desktop ski , and
an update of the windows movie player.
Norton reported nothing out of
whack. I've tried a couple of optio in that KB article already with no
succe , but not the final straw here. You'd think just
desi talling/rei talling would do the trick.

Just ran into this problem this afternoon.
Finally got it repaired.
am ru ing Win98SE.
There is a ecific KB article about this problem
(Q226528).
I found the critical i ue that did it for me was to go to
c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared files.
Delete the
geography and pushpin folders.
Then, go into control panel and delete
the streets and trip program.
Then go into Start\run and type msconfig.
From the start tab, configure for a clean boot.
Re-boot.

When you restart Windows 95 after i talling a program or making a
configuration change to your computer, you may receive one of the
following error me ages:
Windows initializing device IOS: Windows protection error. IOS failed to Initialize, Please restart
While initializing IOS: Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer.

After the error me age is di layed, you may not be able to start Windows
95 normally. However, you should be able to start Windows 95 in Safe mode.
It may also be po ible to start Windows 95 normally after using the
following procedure:
Boot Windows 95 in Safe mode or to a command prompt.
Perform one of the following two ste :
Edit the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files and disable any references to Smartdrv.exe. To disable a line, type
at the begi ing of the line.
Rename Smartdrv.exe to another name.
Restart your computer normally.

FIX: IOS Failed to Initialize Error During I tallation
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 95 and
OEM Service Releases.
This i ue is resolved by the following updated file for Windows 95
and OSR2:
RMM.PDR version 4.00.1112 (dated 03/10/97) and later
The problem occurs only on certain system configuratio , and does not
occur if Internet Explorer 4.0 is i talled on your computer. These system
configuratio have a minimum of 32 MB of RAM and a large number of device
drivers. The problem is rare and can occur only at startup. Users whose
systems are starting succe fully today are not impacted.
